Growing up, I watched my mom bring life to everything she touched. She could grow anything – roses and orchids for beauty, avocado trees, lychee nuts, papayas, oranges, fresh herbs, and vegetables for sustenance. It was like magic. She had this way of taking a tiny cutting, a forgotten sapling on the side of the road, and turning it into something strong and abundant.
I did not inherit that gift.
After my mom died, I could not keep a plant alive to save my life. I tried, I really did. But everything wilted… except for one thing. Bamboo. No matter what I did, no matter how much I forgot to water it, bamboo refused to die. It kept growing, stretching, thriving, unstoppable.
